Don’t Love the Gym? Here Are 5 Reasons CrossFit Might Work for You
If you’ve joined a gym before, gone hard for a few weeks, then slowly stopped showing up, you’re definitely not the only one.
For a lot of people, the problem isn’t that they’re lazy or don’t care about their fitness.
They just don’t particularly enjoy going to the gym.
Walking into a big gym, figuring out what to do, doing the same workout by yourself and trying to stay motivated week after week isn’t everyone’s idea of a good time.
And that’s one of the reasons people are often surprised by CrossFit.
You don’t have to be someone who loves gyms to enjoy CrossFit.
In fact, plenty of our members at CrossFit Prolific in Merewether probably wouldn’t describe themselves as “gym people” at all.
Here are five reasons CrossFit can work really well for people who have never managed to stick with a traditional gym.
1. You don’t have to figure out what to do
This is probably one of the biggest differences.
You don’t walk into CrossFit Prolific and start wondering:
Should I do legs today?
How many sets should I do?
Is that machine free?
What weight should I use?
What am I even training today?
The session is already programmed.
Your coach explains the workout, takes the class through the warm-up, helps you choose appropriate movements and weights, and coaches you through the session.
You basically just need to turn up and train.
For busy parents and professionals, that makes a massive difference.
You’ve already spent all day making decisions. Your training doesn’t need to become another thing you have to plan.
2. Every session is coached
There’s a big difference between having access to gym equipment and actually being coached.
At CrossFit Prolific, classes are coach-led.
That means someone is there to teach movements, correct technique, help you choose the right weights and adjust the workout when necessary.
And no, you’re not expected to know how to do everything before you start.
That would be a bit backwards.
Learning is part of the process.
Whether you’ve trained for years or haven’t exercised properly in a decade, the aim is to find the right version of the session for where you are now.
3. Training with other people makes it easier to keep showing up
Motivation is unreliable.
Some weeks you’ll feel great and genuinely want to train.
Other weeks work is busy, the kids are doing your head in, you haven’t slept properly and sitting on the couch sounds considerably better.
That’s where having a community around you helps.
You start recognising the people in your class. People notice when you’re there. You have a laugh before the session. You train together. Someone might encourage you through the last couple of minutes of a workout.
Over time, going to training becomes less like forcing yourself to “go to the gym” and more like something that’s simply part of your week.
That accountability is incredibly valuable.
4. The workouts change
One of the quickest ways to lose interest in training is doing exactly the same thing every time.
CrossFit combines different types of training across the week.
You might squat or deadlift one day, work on pull-ups another, use the rower or BikeErg, carry something heavy, practise a new skill or do a conditioning workout combining several movements.
There’s structure behind the programming, but there’s also enough variety to keep training interesting.
And because there are so many different areas you can improve, progress isn’t just about what the scales say.
Maybe you lift something you couldn’t lift six months ago.
Maybe you get your first pull-up.
Maybe you can run without stopping.
Maybe you simply finish a workout and realise it would have absolutely destroyed you when you first started.
Those little wins add up.
5. You don’t need to be fit before you start
This is the big one.
A lot of people see CrossFit online and immediately think:
“There’s no way I could do that.”
Fair enough.
If your only exposure to CrossFit is elite athletes competing, it can look pretty intimidating.
But that’s not what an everyday CrossFit class looks like.
In the same class, you might have someone who has trained for ten years alongside someone who started three weeks ago.
They can both train because movements, weights, reps and sometimes even the workout itself can be adjusted to suit the individual.
Someone might be doing pull-ups while someone else uses a simpler variation.
One person might lift 100kg while another lifts 30kg.
Both can still get a great workout.
You don’t get fit so that you can start CrossFit. You start CrossFit to get fitter.
Maybe you don't hate exercise. Maybe you just haven't found the right environment.
If you’ve struggled to stick with traditional gyms, it doesn’t automatically mean you lack motivation or discipline.
Sometimes the environment just isn’t right for you.
Having a coach, a plan, people around you and a session with a clear beginning and end changes the experience completely.
You walk in.
We tell you what we’re doing.
We help you find the right version for you.
You train.
You go home.
Simple.
